A Father’s Legacy | North London Wedding Photographer & Studio
With Father’s Day fast approaching, we’ve found ourselves talking a lot about fathers, family, memories… and the photographs that somehow come to mean even more as the years pass.
At our North London wedding photography and portrait studio, photography has always been about far more than simply taking pictures — it’s about family, connection and preserving memories that become more valuable with time.
This image has always been one of Joel’s favourites.
Not because it won an award.
Not because of the lighting.
Not because of the portrait itself.
But because it’s him with his dad.
And perhaps even more special to us — I, Debbie, actually took the photograph. Peter had set up the lighting in our very first studio together before Joel and I were married, and then handed me the camera to press the shutter. At the time, I don’t think any of us realised just how precious this portrait would one day become.
For those who knew him, Peter Dyer was far more than simply a photographer. He was an internationally renowned and award-winning wedding and portrait photographer whose work spanned decades across North London and far beyond, earning many international photography awards throughout his career.
Together with Pam, Peter built a hugely successful photography business which began over 50 years ago — a business that Joel and I were honoured to take over in 2009 and continue today through Peter Dyer Photographs.
Long before social media, trends and digital photography, Peter was creating timeless wedding and portrait images with an incredible understanding of light, people and storytelling. He photographed generations of families, weddings filled with emotion, and portraits that still hang proudly in homes today.
Joel grew up surrounded by cameras, albums, studio lights and conversations about photography. But more importantly, he grew up watching the way his father cared about people. Photography was never just about taking pictures — it was about preserving moments that would matter more as time went on.

The photograph above shows Joel behind the camera, following in his father's footsteps.
We only recently discovered this photograph of Joel aged 6, taken in 1978, hidden inside one of Peter's old camera cases. Without us ever knowing, Peter had carried that treasured memory of his son with him for years. ❤️
Over the years, it’s been incredibly emotional and rewarding to watch Joel carve out his own path as a photographer. While he learned so much from Peter, he has also developed his own distinctive style and vision, building his own reputation as an international award-winning North London wedding photographer and portrait photographer, photographing weddings and families across London, Hertfordshire and beyond.
There’s something very special about seeing that legacy continue.
Not simply in the business itself, but in the way Joel photographs people — with patience, care, warmth and genuine connection. So many of the values Peter built the studio on still quietly live on today in everything we do at Peter Dyer Photographs.
We lost Peter in 2018, and he is still so very deeply missed.
Father’s Day can be joyful, reflective and sometimes incredibly emotional all at once. For us, it’s a reminder not only of the fathers we love, but also of how important photographs become over time. Images like this grow in meaning with every passing year.
And perhaps that is Peter’s greatest legacy of all.
Not just the awards.
Not just the business.
But the memories he taught us to preserve.
Today, through Joel’s work as a London wedding photographer and through the portraits we create every day in our North London portrait studio, a part of Peter’s passion and artistry continues to live on.
And we know he would be incredibly proud of that.
